2017 was the Year of the Rooster… and we can’t stop crowing about all the amazing moments that have left a lasting impression on us. Reflecting back on last year, our small team at Providence Healthcare Foundation were able to pull off many BIG things. It was our 30th anniversary this year... we had to make the year really special.
Our first signature event of 2017, Cuisine & Cuvée, presented by TD and The Co-Operators, raised $250,000 (net of expenses), 25% more than last year! 36 exceptional food and drink icons with Toronto’s top chefs, caterers, distilleries, bakeries, and breweries, rolled out their finest spreads for our record-setting audience at REBEL on May 26, 2017.
In the summer, on September 11, 2017, we hosted our 23rd annual Providence Golf Classic, presented by EllisDon and St. George's Golf & Country Club raising a record-setting $250,000 (net of expenses) as well.
Closing off our signature events, the 24th annual Silver Ball, presented by Scotiabank, embraced a Celtic theme in celebration of the courageous patients of Providence (our "Brave Hearts") and the confidence built by our dedicated staff to help them overcome catastrophic illnesses, and build strength to get back to life. On November 4, 2017, the gala raised a staggering $1 million (net of expenses), thanks to the support of our sponsors and 800 guests!
All of our signature events raise money in support of Providence Healthcare, helping us transform the future of care and making a significant and meaningful impact on patients and loved ones for decades to come.
Summer is typically a ‘slow time’ for charities but the opposite happened for the Hope Starts Here campaign! In August, Providence Healthcare received a $509,000 gift from a very generous anonymous donor to the campaign.
Generosity was still in the summer air… on September 10, Rexall kicked off its support for the Hope Starts Here campaign with its partnership for Grandparents Day. Pledging $100,000 over four years, Rexall’s amazing matching gift helped entice our donors to give a gift in honour of their grandparents.
One week later on September 18, the campaign officially had its public launch and symbolic groundbreaking of the Knowledge Centre. Excitement was in the air as our donors toured the amazing new space that will transform care at Providence.
Our philanthropic groups, MAPP (Men Advancing Philanthropy for Providence) and WIPP (Women in Philanthropy for Providence) both grew in numbers. MAPP increased its annual donor base from 76 to 88 donors while WIPP is now at 116 annual donors, up from last year’s 110, increasing the overall support for Providence Healthcare.
The men enjoyed events like Casino Royale, Surf & Turf at the Hunt Club, a Kingsman movie premiere, Spirit & Spice Luxury Chef Experience and a Night of Champions event, which was where MAPP donors voted on granting $70,000 for a new Ear, Nose and Throat Suite for Providence Healthcare!
Not to be outdone, the ladies participated in a wonderful set of events this year: the Voting Meeting saluted the Suffragettes; the Inspiration Night featured a professional negotiator equipping donors the skills to use in everyday life; the Creative Night was a hilarious improv workshop; and the Holiday social was a perfect celebratory way to end the year.
We just love meeting new friends! On June 7, Soulpepper Theatre Company joined us for an evening of celebration and music to benefit Providence Healthcare. We celebrated music and friendship with a lively "Friend-raising" musical voyage.
Foresters Financial, always a strong supporter of Providence, hosted a golf tournament in September, raising $50,000 for our Hope Starts Here campaign.
In 2013, the Royal Curlers at the O'Reilly Bonspiel accepted a challenge to raise $50,000 over 5 years to fund a patient suite in the new Palliative Care unit in honour of Leslie O'Reilly mother. This year (the 4th year of the challenge), the 20th annual O’Reilly Bonspiel broke records, raising $20,000, and meeting their five year goal, one year early!
The digital portfolio helped fundraise a few other exciting projects around the Hospital with new Electrical Stimulation units to aid in healing deep wounds, new Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Technology to relieve joint and ligament pain, and funding a brand new Multi-Faith space near the front lobby for our patients and staff.
Providence Healthcare Foundation welcomed three new Board Members:
Lastly, the Foundation achieved prestigious accreditation from Imagine Canada’s Standards Program on October 31, 2017, helping give donors peace of mind and bolstering trust with our organization. Less than 3% of charities in Canada have this honour.
