The Penner family featuring Providence Healthcare and our incredible team of Dr. Ashley Verduyn and Jeff Kestenberg aired on CTV News Toronto on Sunday, January 12, 2020 during the newscast at 6 p.m.
J.D. Penner’s is a story of hope and perseverance. In September 2014, Penner suffered a devastating car crash. He had multiple fractures, nerve damage, and a concussion. During recovery, he was transferred to Providence for further treatment and rehabilitation. Jeff Kestenberg, Physiotherapist at Providence Healthcare, became integral to J.D.’s recovery process as he learned to walk again.
Penner’s wife, Heather, was also injured in the same car accident. The recovery was difficult for them both, along with their two sons.
Dr. Ashley Verduyn, Chief and Director of Medical Affairs at Providence Healthcare explains that for those who have been in an accident, recovery is more than just physical. "For people, particularly [those that] have been in a car accident or something has happened quite suddenly to them, there's a huge emotional recovery too."

J.D. hopes his journey will resonate with someone who is going through something similar. "If I can help show that recovery is possible, that you can try and find the good in something that's really awful, then most people should try to live their lives that way, if they can."
