A Beautiful Day and $220k for the 2016 Providence Golf Classic!

Jul 19, 2016

The Ken and Nancy Shaw Providence Golf Classic, presented by EllisDon, raised a record $220,000 (net) on July 18 at the exclusive Coppinwood Golf Club – the first time in its history the tournament has reached this milestone amount. Twenty-two years later, and more than $3.5 million in proceeds have been raised to benefit thousands of patients, residents, clients and families in our community. Money raised for this year’s event will support Providence’s transformation of its palliative care program.

We think Arnold Palmer would be proud of what we have accomplished, together, as one of the GTA’s longest-running charity tournaments.

2016 PGC Event Highlights:

  • New online silent auction raised $22,500!
  • “35 for 35” Challenge, our online appeal to our 35 foursomes that helped raise $32,500 for our new palliative care program

Providence Impacts Lives

Why I Support the Providence Golf Classic

In 2015, I became a member of the Providence Golf Classic Committee because I wanted to support Providence and thank this wonderful organization for everything they did for my wife, Maureen, and my family.

On August 13, 2012, Maureen had a terrible fall down the stairs in our home, causing a cerebral hemorrhage and severe damage to her neck and spine. Maureen spent almost two weeks in intensive care at St. Michael’s Hospital. Without a doubt, these were the worst days of our lives.

I chose Providence Healthcare to begin Maureen’s rehab journey. When she first arrived, she couldn’t walk or barely speak due to the damage her brain had suffered. The care that my wife received from Dr. Ledger and his expert team was absolutely fantastic. Maureen entered the hospital in what could only be described as almost a vegetative state. But the professionals at Providence provided constant attention and excellent, personalized care. After six weeks in rehab, Maureen returned home to celebrate Thanksgiving with family.

But Maureen still had a long way to go in her recovery. She was mobile, if supported by a walker and functioning, but she was not fully where she needed to be. She soon began outpatient care at Providence. The physiotherapists continued to provide Maureen with the same exceptional therapy, which was a tremendous help in regaining her previous abilities.

I’m delighted to say that if you met Maureen today, you would have never guessed that she had been so badly injured. I have Providence to thank for everything they did to give me back the bright, healthy and wonderful lady she was prior to her accident.

I joined the 23 volunteers on the Golf Committee to help make this charitable event (and many more hereafter) a tremendous success. It feels good raising much-needed dollars so that a great healthcare organization like Providence, can continue to care for people in the community with compassion and dignity. I am grateful to my family for all of their support and financial contributions during those very trying times, and thankful for my friends and supporters, many of whom attended the PGC tournament. For that, I am so very appreciative.

Your generosity made it all possible. Thank you from my family to yours!

Our premier sponsors, EllisDon, Coppinwood Golf Club, and Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment, set the sponsorship pace this year, and it’s our pleasure to thank these incredible companies for their support. In addition, we sold out the tournament in record time!

Did you know that 100% of the proceeds from your sponsorships and team sales returns to Providence? This essential funding is helping Providence do more to support its community, such as the transformation of our Palliative Care program, which will have a significant and meaningful impact on patients and their loved ones for decades to come. Thank you to everyone who participated in our “equipment auction” to help furnish a room in Palliative Care. We raised $32,730 for this special initiative.

What a day to celebrate the height of summer, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to the 2017 PGC on Monday, September 11, 2017 at St. George’s Golf and Country Club.
