10 tips for staying healthy at home

Apr 09, 2020

Staying home is the number one priority for everyone right now, as we continue to do our part to flatten the curve on COVID-19. The question is…how can we stay healthy while staying home? Kim Garland, Providence Healthcare Physiotherapist, shares some tips on what she’s doing during these challenging times.

  • Wash your hands: As always, wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds with soap and water.
  • Stay home: Stay home as much as possible. Do not leave your house or come to work if you are feeling sick or have a fever.
  • Social distance: If you find yourself in a situation where you are feeling healthy and have to leave your house, ensure you keep a distance of 2 meters (two arms lengths) from other people that are not in your household.
  • Sleep: Your body repairs itself while you sleep. It’s so important to get your rest.
  • Eat healthy food: In order to keep my patients safe, I have family and friends pick up what I need from the grocery store. I plan my meals in advance so it’s easier for me to choose healthy things for my family and I to eat. I avoid take out and fast food whenever possible, but understand how important this option is for some.
  • Exercise: Continue with your workouts, but modify as needed based on what you have access to at home. YouTube has great content. Now is the time to pick up something new. I am learning to Hip Hop dance.
  • Go for walks: I walk my dog a lot. Being in nature is very helpful for me to combat stress.
  • Be kind to yourself: After a stressful day, I personally love a hot shower. Treat yourself to something that makes you feel good.
  • Talk to your loved ones: I Skype my family and friends often. I actually find that I am talking to them more now than prior to COVID-19. I have a standing virtual date with my girlfriends on Tuesday nights. It’s something nice to look forward to while we are social distancing.
  • Sing: We all need to find that one thing that helps us cope and maintain a sense of normalcy. For me, that’s singing. To keep things interesting, listen to a new song… Pearl Jam’s new album is fantastic! Just saying….

If we all work together and do our part, we will come out of this stronger than before.
