Providence Healthcare’s revitalized and relocated Scotiabank Learning Centre opened to the community in April, 2008. A $250,000 gift from Scotiabank Group funded the transformation of this multi-faceted resource centre for families learning to cope with life-altering illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease and stroke.

The expanded Learning Centre helps address the need for information, education, counseling and support to the culturally-diverse families in the Toronto East community and those served by Providence Healthcare.

The original Learning Centre opened in 1997 as part of Providence’s Adult Day Program, to support the caregivers of individuals with irreversible dementia.

Now located on the first floor of Providence Hospital (Room B156), the Centre extends its reach to families coping with other illnesses and chronic conditions such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, arthritis and Parkinson’s. The new space is organized into a variety of “zones” for different activities such as:

Caregiver Support Groups

The Scotiabank Learning Centre holds three monthly support groups. Group meetings consist of ’round table’ discussions on topics relating to dementia and caregiving. Participants enjoy meeting new friends and sharing their thoughts, ideas and helpful hints for caring for someone with dementia. Visit our events calendar for upcoming sessions.
