Cutting the Ribbon on our New Palliative Care Space

On October 12, we opened our new palliative care unit to support our patients at the end of their lives and their families. Close to 150 people were in attendance for the ribbon cutting and to tour the space, including his Eminence Thomas Cardinal Collins, Sisters from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto, Sun Life Financial President and Chair of our Hope Starts Here campaign Kevin Dougherty, and Patsy Badali, who provided a moving testimonial of her own experience with our palliative care program when her uncle Sal died.

For our patients and families, the new space provides:

  • A warm, home-like and tranquil environment
  • Comfortable patient rooms with pull out sleeper recliners for families
  • Overnight suites and personal care spaces for families, a play area for children and a business centre
  • Easy access to a peaceful, relaxing outdoor space.
  • Common rooms for socializing with family, pet visiting, music, spiritual needs, entertainment, arts and crafts, computer work space, television and movie watching
  • Two bathroom spas with heated towel racks
  • New artwork and floor and wall colours and finishes more in keeping with a contemporary, calming home than a hospital

We move patients into the new unit on October 24. Thank you to everyone who attended the grand opening and to all our donors who made this space possible.
